WE ARE members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. We were affiliated with Alpha Nu Chapter on the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois between 1960 and 1966. Most of us studied education and social work - jobs open to women of our day; but at a time when it wasn't (and still isn't) easy to be us, we are also mathematicians, biologists, "doctors" (PhD's), lawyers, chiefs of stuff, preachers, theologians, elected officials, dancers, scientists, musicians, artists, actresses, and senior managers. We are mothers who worked. We were full-time employees who volunteered in our communities. In 1965, three were arrested for protesting discriminatory housing. We love books; we love the arts; and we celebrate diversity. Time strengthened our ties: we were there for weddings, births, and "keeper" and "starter" husbands; mid-life and kid drama; eldercare; health crises, and death. Most are retired or pursuing deferred passions. At root, we are spiritual folk for whom the music takes us “home.” Sometimes we catch ourselves rockin', but sometimes we "jes' sits and cries." We come when asked, but sometimes we "jes' comes ..."

to strong, smart, spiritual, responsible, giving women.
Our accomplishments are impressive.
Our loyalty is strong.
Our connection endures.
